Save MySQL

In April 2009, Oracle announced that it had agreed to acquire Sun. Since Sun had acquired MySQL the previous year, this would mean that Oracle, the market leader for closed source databases, would get to own MySQL, the most popular open source database.

If Oracle acquired MySQL on that basis, it would have as much control over MySQL as money can possibly buy over an open source project. In fact, for most open source projects (such as Linux or Apache) there isn’t any comparable way for a competitor to buy even one tenth as much influence. But MySQL’s success has always depended on the company behind it that develops, sells and promotes it. That company (initially MySQL AB, then Sun) has always owned the important intellectual property rights (IPRs), most notably the trademark, copyright and (so far only for defensive purposes) patents. It has used the IPRs to produce income and has reinvested a large part of those revenues in development, getting not only bigger but also better with time.

If those IPRs fall into the hands of MySQL’s primary competitor, then MySQL immediately ceases to be an alternative to Oracle’s own high-priced products. So far, customers had the choice to use MySQL in new projects instead of Oracle’s products. Some large companies even migrated (switched) from Oracle to MySQL for existing software solutions. And every one could credibly threaten Oracle’s salespeople with using MySQL unless a major discount was granted. If Oracle owns MySQL, it will only laugh when customers try this. Getting rid of this problem is easily worth one billion dollars a year to Oracle, if not more.

WoWFusion

Do you remember WoWFusion? Most people in the WoW private server community would answer yes. 70% of those probably played the server at some point, and I’d bargain that 50% would give a lot to see it back — Unfortunately it’s dead.

Looking back, I realize just how much I miss it.. We had a lot of fun there, me and Shadowmaru (referred to as ‘Shadow’ from now on) would spend countless hours in Ventrilo thinking up ideas for the server, only maybe 5% max. actually got introduced to the server — some of which didn’t get introduced correctly due to time constraints. I definitely had a lot of fun there, much more then I realized at the time. The funny part is that I didn’t even play the server, at the time I played retail.

Most people liked Hyjal, and the donors the best on fusion because they provided a completely over powered, and new experience.. Me and Shadow however, among a few other developers that came and went disliked Hyjal, and wanted to redo it. Though Shadow finally did make a script for Hyjal at one point .. the community hated that they now had a challenge, and we were forced to remove it.

One of the things we loved doing the most however, had to have been the “Dev events” — these are the ‘events’ you see where for a short period of time, a ton of stuff is spawned, new quests, etc. After a generally undisclosed period of time these would get despawned. One of the most memorable was the Halloween event, where you could either get the “Ring of Blood” or the “Ring of tears” depending on whether you were a melee, or caster. Shadow frequently would tell the community “you couldn’t raid a dead rat” because in all honesty, the donor items a lot of people had gave off that image, no one raided anymore. So, in this Halloween event, for one of the quests you literally had to raid a dead rat. Yes, a dead rat. The rat was located in shattrath city, and was the size of a large Elekk, it didn’t attack back, or move at all!  Later in the quest you had to go into your major city and kill shadow, and his pet “Fluffy”, all in all, it was a pretty funny event, and I think overall people enjoyed it.

I really do miss WoWFusion, but it’s dead and gone – and needs to stay that way.
